News India Live, Digital Desk: A very sad and worrying news has come out from Madhya Pradesh, where a cough syrup named ‘Coldrif’ snatched away 21 innocent lives. This incident has not only broken families, but is also raising serious questions on the quality and control of medicines in India. After the death of so many children, the police have finally arrested the owner of the pharmaceutical company that manufactures this deadly drug.

What happened after all?

‘Coldrif’ cough syrup was manufactured by a company called ‘Cesan Pharmaceuticals’ based in Kanchipuram district of Tamil Nadu. It is alleged that at least 21 children from several districts of Madhya Pradesh – like Ujjain, Guna and Shivpuri – have died after drinking this poisonous syrup. Chhindwara Superintendent of Police Ajay Pandey said that 73-year-old owner of Sesan Pharmaceuticals, G. Ranganathan was taken into custody by the police on Wednesday night. He will first be produced in a Chennai court and then brought to Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh for further investigation

There was poison in the medicine!

Initial medical tests have confirmed that this syrup contained very dangerous chemicals like Diethylene Glycol. These chemicals caused serious damage to the kidneys of the children, due to which they lost their lives. It is even more painful to know that most of the children were given this syrup for minor cold and cough, and within a few days of taking it they started falling seriously ill.

The death toll may increase!

Health officials have warned that about 40 other children are still under the observation of doctors due to similar health problems, due to which the death toll is likely to increase. Some such cases related to ‘Coldrif’ syrup have been reported not only from Madhya Pradesh but also from Rajasthan, where children got kidney infection after drinking it and some even died.

What steps did the government take?

Lab testing conducted in Tamil Nadu had also confirmed the presence of poisonous chemicals in ‘Coldrif’ syrup. Tamil Nadu’s Drugs Control Director submitted this investigation report to Madhya Pradesh officials on October 4. Soon after receiving the report, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav ordered an immediate ban on the sale, distribution and storage of ‘Coldrif’ syrup in the entire state. Later, by Cesan Pharmaceuticals All medicines manufactured were also banned.

The Drug Control Department of Tamil Nadu is also now on alert and has started investigation in the entire state. It is reported that more than 2,000 bottles of Goldtrip Coldrip may still be in the markets. Due to this, District Drug Inspectors have been instructed to seize this medicine and send it to the Drug Control Laboratory, Chennai for testing.
