News India Live, Digital Desk: Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju Has contacted opposition parties including Congress to bring impeachment motion against Justice Verma in the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament. This step is being considered after allegations of cash being recovered from his Delhi residence in March.
Hindustan Times quoted him as saying, “I have started the process of contacting opposition parties. I have told him that this is not a political issue, but an important issue related to corruption in the judiciary and hence all parties should unite to remove this concern.”
Talking to the newspaper, a senior party official said that the government is trying to contact the opposition parties to support the proposal against the judge, which will require a two -thirds majority. According to the official, the proposal will be introduced in both houses of Parliament by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal.
The development came to light a few days after the letter was written by former Chief Justice of India Sanjeev Khanna to President Draupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the removal of Justice Verma. In its letter, the former CJI had said that the charge of recovery of cash at the judge’s residence is a serious matter.
Earlier on May 5, an in-house check panel submitted its report to CJI. In its report, the panel confirmed that the cash was found at the residence of Justice Verma, who was a judge of the Delhi High Court at that time. The cash was kept in a storeroom, where the fire broke out on 14 March, after which half the burnt notes were found in a sack. The police also recorded a cash video.
