Only 50 thousand population, still why Municipal Corporation? There is a threat to the rules of many cities of Jharkhand:

News India Live, Digital Desk: Often we curse the Municipal Corporations (Nagar Nigam / Municipal Corporation) for the cleanliness, water, roads, and other arrangements around us. But have you ever wondered why your city is called ‘Municipal Corporation’, and not any other?

Jharkhand High Court has now raised a big and important question regarding this issue. The court has asked the Jharkhand government whether the classification of municipal corporations in the state has been done correctly, or is it directly against the constitutional rules?

What is this ‘whole matter’ and why did the question arise?

Actually, according to Jharkhand Municipal Act, to make any area a municipal corporation, there should be a fixed standard, such as population, revenue and density of population etc.

But, what is troubling the court is that there are some cities which have been made Municipal Corporations by the Jharkhand Government, even though their population does not meet the standards like 50,000 or 5 lakh. Suppose, the population of some place is very less, yet it is a municipal corporation! The petitioners have raised the same question – that this arbitrary classification of municipal bodies is completely unjustified.

What has the High Court asked from the government?

While hearing this petition, the bench of Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court has given clear instructions to the government. The court has said that you should submit a complete report on the current status of Jharkhand Municipal Corporations and the constitutional validity of the entire process of classifying them. Simply put, tell us what legal rules you followed while announcing the Municipal Corporation!

This is a very serious issue, because classification of cities not only changes the name, but it also changes the entire mathematics of taxes, facilities and development schemes in that city. Now all eyes are on Jharkhand government to see what answer it gives in the court. This decision can decide the future direction of many small and big municipal corporations in the state.
