Taking a big decision today on 23rd December, the Union Education Ministry has abolished the No Detention Policy. Now students who fail in the annual examination of class 5 and class 8 will not be passed.
Till now the failing students were passed and promoted to the next class. However, now, this will not happen. Unsuccessful students will be given a chance to retake the exam within two months.
If a student fails again, he will not be promoted. Taking a step towards improving the level of learning in elementary education, the Union Education Ministry has abolished the no detention policy for Class 5 and Class 8.
Under this policy, students who did not succeed in the examination were allowed to be promoted to the next class and no student was expelled from the school till class 8.
It is noteworthy that 16 states and two union territories had already abolished the no detention policy for both these standards after amending the Right to Education (RTE) Act in 2019.
It has been clarified in the notification of the Union Education Ministry that no child will be expelled from any school until the completion of elementary education.
According to senior officials of the Education Ministry, this rule will be applicable to more than 3,000 schools run by the central government, including Kendriya Vidyalayas, Navodaya Vidyalayas and Sainik Schools.
However, the ministry has said that since education is a state subject, the state can take its own decision in this regard.
