The West Bengal government has taken an important decision to make the administrative system of the state more efficient. According to the new guidelines issued from the state administrative headquarters ‘Navan’, now the state government offices will not remain completely closed even on Saturdays, Sundays and other government holidays. In order to continue public interest and administrative work without any hindrance, the government has now made the presence of employees mandatory on these days also.

Employees will work through rotation system According to the official notification issued by the state Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms, senior officers are often busy with important work related to public interest even during holidays. To provide necessary technical and clerical support to these officers, duty of employees of various departments will be deployed on rotation basis. This means that all the employees will not have to come on every holiday, rather a roster will be prepared under which employees will reach the office one by one.

Why was this decision taken? The government believes that continuity is very important for the smooth functioning of administrative work. It has been clarified in the notification that the presence of minimum essential employees in the offices, which is being called ‘Skeleton Staff’, will have to be ensured under all circumstances. This order has been issued after the approval of the Additional Chief Secretary. There is talk in the corridors of the Secretariat that if this experiment is successful in ‘Navan’, then in the coming days a similar rotation system can be made mandatory in the offices of District Magistrates (DM), Department Rulers (SDO) and BDO.
