News India Live, Digital Desk: Itr Filing: Filing Income Tax Return (ITR) is an important task of every year, but many people consider it complicated and seek the help of CA (Chartered Accountant). However, the Government of India has made the Income Tax Portal so easy that now you can fill your ITR online without any external help! This not only saves your money, but also gives you a better understanding of your financial situation.

Come, know how you can file your ITR online sitting at home, step-by-step:

Step-by-step guide to file itr online:

  1. Go to the Income Tax Department website:

    • First of all, you have to visit the official website of Income Tax Department: Inometax.gov.in

    • This is your one-stop destination to file ITR.

  2. Login/Register:

    • If you have never filed ITR before or are not registered on the website, then register first.

    • If there is already an account, login your PAN number with a user ID and password.

  3. Choose E-File Options:

    • After login, click on ‘E-File’ section and then choose ‘Income Tax Returns’.

    • Click on ‘File Income Tax Return’ here.

  4. Choose Assessment Year and Fileing Mode:

    • Choose the correct assessment year, for which you are filling ITR. This usually occurs one year after the financial year (eg FY 2024-25 for 2023-24).

    • Then choose ‘online’ mode.

  5. Choose ITR Form:

    • Choose the correct ITR form depending on your income source (eg Salaried is usually ITR-1 or ITR-2, ITR-3/4 for businessmen). The system often helps you choose the right form.

  6. Choose the reason for filing:

    • Choose whether you are filling ITR for yourself, or section 139 (4) (late filing) or section 139 (5) (revised returns).

  7. Check pre-Filled data:

    • This is the biggest feature of the portal! Many data links to your PAN (eg salary, bank interest, TDS) already pre-fielded. Check these information carefully and fix it if there is an error.

  8. Fill your income details:

    • Fill the details of all income sources like salary, house rent, capital gains, income from other sources (eg bank interest, FD interest) etc.

    • If you deduct tax (TDS), then match your form 16 and 26AS.

  9. Fill the cuts and discounts:

    • Enter the deductions or exemptions you have taken here under Section 80C (eg PPF, ELSS, Insurance), 80D (Health Insurance), 80G (donation) etc. This will reduce your taxable income.

  10. Calculation and Payment of Tax:

    • The system will automatically calculate your total income, deductions and taxes.

    • If an additional tax is outstanding, pay it online and enter the challan details.

  11. Submit ITR:

    • Once all the information seems correct, then submit the ITR.

    • It is advisable that you read the draft of the entire ITR form carefully.

  12. E-verification of returns:

    • After filing the return, it is mandatory to do e-verification. Without this, your ITR process will not be considered complete.

    • You can verify it in many ways like Aadhaar OTP, Net Banking, Bank Account EVC or Demat account EVC.

Bus! In a few easy steps, you can file your ITR at home without the help of CA. This will help you save both time and money.
