It is often said that in government work, less brain is used and more paper is used, but you will be surprised as well as laugh after hearing what happened in Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan. Here Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) crossed all limits in its zeal to remove encroachment. Leave alone humans, the officials sent a notice to God.
The matter became so serious that the public enjoyed it on social media and criticized the administration. The result was that the officer who had issued this ‘Tughlaqi Farman’ had to be suspended from his job.
What is the whole matter?
This story is from Vaishali Nagar area of Jaipur. There the work of widening the road is going on on Gandhi Path. High Court orders that the road should be 100 feet wide. JDA arrived with his tape measure and machines to measure. During this period, many shops and houses came under JD and notices were given to them.
But there was also an ancient Shiva temple on the way. When the officials measured, they found that the wall of the temple was about one and a half meters (1.59 m) inside the road boundary. So what, “Rules are rules” – thinking this he prepared a notice.
I was surprised when I found out in whose name the notice was addressed!
Neither the name of the priest nor of any trust was on the notice. It was clearly written on it- “Vs: Lord Shiva”,
In the notice, Mahadev was ordered – “You should respond to this notice issued on November 21 within 7 days (by November 28). Bring your documents and tell why you are sitting there? If you do not come, we will be forced to take action.”
When JDA people reached the temple with this paper, even the priests were stunned. He flatly refused to take the notice. Now even the government employees were not going to agree, they took that paper and pasted it on the wall of the God’s temple.
People’s anger and sarcasm on social media
As soon as the picture of the notice pasted on the wall went viral, there was an uproar. People started writing on social media-
- “Will Lord Shiva now have to go to JDA office with his Aadhar card?”
- “It appears the officer was under the influence of cannabis.”
- It was described as a joke of ‘faith versus administration’.
People said that the temple is years old and is the center of faith of the local people. The administration could have at least talked to the Trust or the priest, sending a legal notice to God is an insult to his sentiments.
The government woke up and the officers measured up.
When the matter surfaced in newspapers and TV, the matter directly reached the Chief Minister’s office. The government found this to be a very insensitive and careless step. Orders were immediately issued and JDA Secretary Nishant Jain suspended Enforcement Officer Arun Poonia with immediate effect.
The suspension order clearly stated that the officer had acted “arbitrarily and negligently”. This incident teaches that it is not enough to just sit on the chair and follow the rules, a little common sense i.e. ‘practical intelligence’ is also very important.
