Notice issued to pay GST of Rs 17 crore to Mumbai University

Mumbai – Mumbai University has received notice to pay GST of Rs 16.90 crore. The Central GST department has sent this notice to the university to pay GST since 2017. Therefore, now government universities will also have to give a part of their income to the Central Government as GST and the burden will also be on the students.

There are about 942 colleges affiliated to the University of Mumbai. The college pays a fixed fee to the university for this affiliation. This fee contributes significantly to the income of the university. But sources have told that the university will now have to pay GST on this fee amount.

According to the Central GST Act, the GST department has asked the university to pay Rs 16.90 crore GST and a fine on it since 2017. But sources have also revealed that the university did not take this amount from colleges. Now its burden is likely to fall on the university. However, the university has not officially given any information on the matter. But sources have also revealed that the university is preparing to file an appeal against GST payment notice. This appeal will be made before the GST Department and the Commissioner of Central Excise Department. Sources said that since the university is a government institution, the appeal will demand a demand to waive GST on it.
