New rule of Railways: The lower berth has always been the first choice for millions of passengers traveling in Indian Railways, especially for the elderly and those who have difficulty in climbing the above berth. In view of this problem, the Railways has now explained an easy way to get a lower berth for certain passengers and has also made some special rules for this.
It is often seen that despite choosing the lower berth, many times passengers get the above berths, causing trouble. Now the Railways has made it clear that if you choose the option of lower berth while booking tickets, then the system tries to get the same. However, this is not sure confirmation, unless you fall into certain categories.
Who will get confirmed lower berth facility?
According to the rules of the railway, the elderly, pregnant women and the disabled (Divyang) are given priority in traveling on the lower berth. For these, every sleeper coach, third AC (3AC) and second AC (2AC) coaches are reserved in a certain number of lower berths:
-
For the elderly and women:
-
In sleeper class: 6 lower berths
-
3ac and 2ac: 3 lower berths (in each coach)
-
Male passengers who are 60 years or older, and female passengers who are 45 years or older get this facility. Pregnant women have also been included in this category.
-
-
For disabled people:
-
Every train sleepers and 3AC coaches are 2–2 berths, which are specially reserved for a subsidiary/escort traveling with the disabled and them.
-
How will you get the facility?
You just have to choose the option of ‘lower berth’ at online or ticket counter while booking tickets. If you fall into one of the categories mentioned above and the seats prescribed for that category are available, then you will get the confirmed lower berth. If another passenger, who does not fall into this category, chooses the option of the lower berth and fills the quota seats, then he can get any available berth based on the system.
Therefore, the next time you book a ticket, especially if you are elderly, pregnant or disabled, then choose the option of lower berth. Railways will take care of your convenience!
