Many people want to start business related to food items. However, many traders do not know that it is necessary to have a FSSAI license in the food business. Now the question is how to get this license or certificate?

According to the website of ‘Food Safety and Standards Authority of India’, you will only need three documents for FSSAI. These include a photo, photo identity card issued by the government (eg Aadhaar, PAN, Voter ID) and proof of business address (if the address is different from the address given on the photo identity card).
FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) is a government institution that works under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. There are three types of FSSAI license.
First, ‘Basic Registration’ is for small FBO (Food Business Operators) whose annual turnover is up to ₹ 12 lakhs. Its fee is ₹ 100. Apart from this, ‘State license’ is for businesses with annual turnover ranging from ₹ 12 lakh to ₹ 20 crore. Its fees ranges from ₹ 2,000 to ₹ 5,000. In addition, the ‘Central License’ is for businesses, imports/exports or big manufacturers with annual turnover of more than ₹ 20 crore. The estimated fee of this license is ₹ 7,500.
Talking about the procedure, first of all visit the FOSCOS portal https://foscos.fssai.gov.in. Here you will see an option called “apply for new license/registration”. Now you click on that option. After clicking “Apply for new license/registration”, you will see many other options. If you want a license immediately, select the “immediate” option or the “general” option.
On the next page, you have to choose the ‘state’ where your food business is located. For example, if your business is in Gujarat, then you have to choose the ‘Gujarat’ state. In the next stage, you have to choose the type of your business. For this, you will see many categories on your screen. For example, if you have a restaurant, you have to choose a ‘restaurant’.
Now you will be asked how much the annual turnover of your business is. You will get registration, central license or state license based on your turnover. After selecting on the basis of the turnover, click ‘Get forward’. Then on the next page you will see some important information related to your business and license. Now at the bottom you will see a message in which it will be written, “You are eligible for registration, click here to move forward.” Just click there and proceed.
Additionally, you have to fill ‘Form A’. You have to carefully fill your name, address, mobile number and various information related to Aadhaar number. After filling all this information, click on ‘Save and Next’. A map will open on your screen, where you have to choose the location of your business. Next, click on ‘OK’. On doing this, the message of ‘successfully verify’ will appear. Now you have to click on ‘Get forward’.
On the next page you have to upload all the documents and pay the fee. Note that you have to pay a fee of ₹ 100 for 1 year. You can also pay the fee simultaneously for 2, 3 or more years. After this work is completed, go to the next stage. Now you will get a ‘reference number’ for your application.
After this, your license process will be completed and you will get the license within a few days. Keep in mind that if your turnover increases, you have to take a central license or state license. If you are starting a small business, you can simply register, but as your business grows, you have to take appropriate steps.
