New Delhi, 26 August (HS). Like other parts of the country, Chehlum was celebrated in a sombre atmosphere in the capital Delhi today. On this occasion, Shia Muslims took out white Tazia and mourning procession in Old Delhi.
Every year on the tenth of Muharram, Chehlum is celebrated on the fortieth day of the martyrdom of Prophet Hazrat Mohammad's grandson Hazrat Imam Hussain and the martyrs of Karbala.

In Old Delhi, this procession of white tazias, famous as Masoom ka Tazia, started from Pahari Bhojla and passed through Chitli Qabbar, Bazar Matia Mahal, Jama Masjid, Chawri Bazar, Ajmeri Gate, New Delhi Railway Station, Connaught Place, Sansad Marg and concluded at Karbala Jor Bagh. On the occasion of Chehlum, mourning was observed in the Imambaras and Azakhanas by organizing Azaadari, Marsiya Khwani and Matam etc. throughout the night.
The Masoom Ka Tazia has been coming out of Old Delhi in this manner for hundreds of years. Shia Muslims from all over Delhi participate in this mourning procession of Tazias along with their families. These mourners remember the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain Sahib by reciting Marsiya and mourning all along the way.
