Monsoon Fury: IMD issues a ‘mega-alert’ for heavy rain and storms across more than 20 states, including Bihar; heatwave continues to grip UP


For the people suffering from the scorching heat across the country, on one hand there is relief and on the other hand there is news of disaster. The pace of south-west monsoon is now continuously gaining momentum. Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a major update for June 27 and has issued orange and red alerts for heavy to very heavy rains, strong thunderstorms and lightning in more than 20 states of the country.

According to meteorologists, at present the northern limit of monsoon is passing through Surat, Indore, Mandla, Daltonganj and Motihari. It is a matter of relief that within the next 3 to 4 days, the conditions have become completely favorable for the monsoon to advance into the remaining parts of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar as well as some more new areas of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Red alert of extremely heavy rain: fear of trouble in Bengal and Sikkim

The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert regarding torrential and extremely heavy rains in some states on June 27. There is a strong possibility of record-breaking rainfall at isolated places in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim. The risk of landslides on the mountains has also increased in these areas. Along with this, strong winds at a speed of 30-40 km per hour are also expected in these areas. Apart from this, very heavy rains including torrential rains are expected at different places in the major northeastern states of Assam and Meghalaya, due to which rivers and streams may overflow.

Badra will rain in these states of South India including Bihar, Jharkhand

According to the latest bulletin of IMD, widespread rainfall will be recorded over a large part of the country on June 27. The Meteorological Department has released the region-wise list of states:

  • Eastern and North-Eastern India: There is a possibility of heavy rain in many districts of Bihar and Odisha. Along with this, northeastern states like Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura will also see heavy rains.

  • Central and Western India: A warning of heavy rain has been issued in Chhattisgarh as well as in the coastal areas of Konkan and Goa. At the same time, widespread rainfall is also expected in the Ghat areas of Central Maharashtra.

  • South India: Heavy rain alert has been issued in isolated parts of Coastal Karnataka, North Interior Karnataka, Kerala, Mahe, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal and Telangana.

Warning of storm, lightning and thunderstorm from Delhi-NCR to Rajasthan

The Meteorological Department has advised people to be alert not only about rain, but also about deadly lightning and destructive winds. Jharkhand is at the highest risk on June 27, where winds with gale speed of 50-60 km per hour are likely to cause thunderstorms and lightning.

Apart from this, there is an alert of dust storm with speed of 40 to 50 km per hour and lightning along with thunder at different places in Delhi-NCR (Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi), Punjab, Western Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Eastern Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Mahe and Lakshadweep. At the same time, winds will blow at a speed of 30-40 km per hour in East Rajasthan, Telangana, Interior Karnataka, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim.

Heat wave will not stop in UP, heat wave will continue

While on one hand half of the country is going to be drenched in monsoon rains, on the other hand the residents of Uttar Pradesh do not seem to be getting any much relief from the heat at present. According to the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of heat wave to severe heat wave conditions in different areas of Eastern Uttar Pradesh on June 27. Hot winds will trouble people in some parts of western UP also. Similarly, the weather before the rains has been predicted to be extremely hot, humid and unsettled in different parts of Odisha.
