1. First thing first: Get your card blocked immediately
As soon as you notice any unknown transaction, your first and most important thing is to get your credit card blocked immediately. Fraudsters often try to make several transactions one after the other. Blocking the card immediately protects you from any further financial loss.
- How to block: Customer care helpline number is given on the back of almost every bank’s credit card. Call him immediately and ask to block your card. Apart from this, you can also block your card through the bank’s mobile app or netbanking in a few seconds.
2. Give formal notice of fraud to the bank
After blocking the card, the second step is to formally inform the bank about the fraud. Just telling on phone is not enough.
- Give information in writing: Submit your complaint in writing to the bank via email or by visiting their complaint portal. In this complaint, give all the necessary information like date, time, and amount of the fraudulent transaction. Don’t forget to take the complaint reference or ticket number from the bank, this will be very useful to you in future.
3. Complain on National Cyber Crime Helpline
This is a very important step, which people often ignore. The Government of India has created a special helpline and portal to report online financial fraud.
- Helpline number 1930: Register your complaint by calling this number immediately. This helpline is directly connected to banks and financial institutions, which helps in freezing the money in the accounts of fraudsters.
- Online Portal: AAP National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (www.cybercrime.gov.in) You can also register your complaint in detail by visiting. The sooner you report here, the better your chances of getting your money back.
4. Gather all the evidence
It is very important to collect and preserve all the necessary evidence to strengthen your complaint.
- What to collect: Screenshots of SMS and email alerts of fraudulent transactions, your credit card statement showing the transaction, and copies of complaints made to the bank and cyber cell. All these documents will strengthen your case and prove that you took action without delay.
5. File an FIR (if necessary)
If the amount of fraud is large, the bank may ask you to lodge an FIR (First Information Report) with the police.
- Where to complain: You can lodge an FIR by going to your nearest police station or its cyber cell. Make sure to take a copy of the FIR and submit it to your bank as well.
Remember, your vigilance is your safety. As per RBI guidelines, if you report the fraud immediately (within 3 days) and there is no negligence on your part, your liability becomes zero. So, don’t panic in any such case, just follow these steps quickly.
