This accident took place on 22 May 2010, When Air India Express flight 812 (Boeing 737-800) was coming from Dubai and fell from the runway and fell into the ditch while landing at Mangaluru Airport. In the accident, 158 passengers and crew members were killed out of 166 people aboard the aircraft, while eight people survived miraculously. Investigation revealed that the accident was mainly due to the fault of the pilot.
To compensate for the damage caused by this accident, the three major public sector insurance companies of India – New India Assurance, Oriental Insurance Company and United India Insurance – received a major setback. These companies had to pay in three items:
