After the crushing and historic defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections, the dissatisfaction within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has now erupted like a volcano. The party is currently facing an existential crisis as there has been a flood of resignations of councilors in many important municipalities of the state. The number of councilors who have collectively resigned has crossed 100.
The most surprising thing about this rebellion is that the rebel councilors are now openly tearing apart the much talked about ‘Diamond Harbor Model’ of party supremo Mamata Banerjee’s nephew and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee. Not only this, there is also a lot of speculation in the political circles that many MPs (MPs) of Trinamool Congress are also preparing to leave Mamata Banerjee and join another party very soon.
Abhishek Banerjee’s own stronghold breached, board scattered like a deck of cards
This fastest fire of rebellion has erupted in Diamond Harbor, the parliamentary constituency of Abhishek Banerjee, considered the successor of Mamata Banerjee. Diamond Harbor Municipality has a total of 16 board members, 8 of whom have simultaneously resigned from their positions.
Amidst this political turmoil, Diamond Harbor Municipality President Pranab Das expressed his helplessness while talking to the media. He said, “We have tried everything possible for the development of the municipal area, but our tenure is only for five years. Even though I am the chairman now, this board can completely disintegrate at any time. Everyone’s support is needed for the development of the area.”
Police was running the municipality: Serious questions raised on Abhishek Banerjee’s model
The councilors who have resigned from TMC have exposed Abhishek Banerjee’s so-called ‘Diamond Harbor Model’. The councilors’ direct and serious allegation is that in the name of this model only anarchy and dictatorship was being spread in the entire area. Interestingly, Abhishek Banerjee often praised this model on national platforms as a symbol of the development of his region.
The rebel councilors say that whenever they tried to complain to the high command about corruption happening at the local level, they were harassed and harassed by the police. The councilors even said, “It was not the chairman who was running the municipality, but the police on his own orders.” Councilor Tamal Halder, who resigned from Ward No. 7, clearly alleged that there was excessive and illegal occupation of the local administration by the police. The police were only implementing dictatorial orders from above. We warned our leadership about this several times, but no action was taken.
TMC clean from Bhatpara to Kanthi, know where and how big the losses are
The figures coming out from many municipalities of West Bengal are enough to give Mamata Banerjee sleepless nights. The mathematics of municipalities in the state has deteriorated in this way:
-
Bhatpara Municipality: TMC has suffered the biggest and fatal blow here, where 30 out of total 35 councilors have resigned en masse.
-
North Barrackpore: Out of the total 23 wards, 15 councilors, including the chairman, among the existing 20 councilors, have said bye-bye to the party.
-
Garuliya: Here 18 out of 21 councilors have resigned from their posts, raising the flag of rebellion.
-
Halisahar: In this municipality too, 16 out of 23 councilors have submitted mass resignation.
-
Kanchrapara: Here 14 out of 24 TMC councilors have stepped back.
-
Kanthi: Even in this stronghold of Shubhendu Adhikari, 12 out of 17 TMC councilors have resigned from their posts.
Municipalities may be dissolved, government preparing for administrator rule
Amidst this fierce political turmoil in West Bengal, preparations for legal and administrative action have also started. According to high-ranking officials of the state government, the government has special powers under the West Bengal Municipal Act 1993.
If more than two-thirds of the councilors in any municipality resign collectively, the state government has the power to dissolve that entire board with immediate effect. Looking at the current situation, it is believed that government administrators can be appointed very soon to run the work smoothly till re-elections are held in all these municipalities.
