The biggest news of the moment from the country’s politics is coming from the capital Delhi, where a very important and high-profile general meeting of the opposition ‘India’ alliance is going to be held on Monday, June 8, 2026. This is the first time after the general elections when all the big leaders of the opposition alliance are going to gather on one platform. The main objective of this meeting was to prepare the future political strategy and to give the message of unity of the alliance. But the surprising thing is that even before the meeting has started, the wall of opposition unity seems to be crumbling. The three very strong pillars of the alliance – Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Tamil Nadu’s ruling DMK (DMK) and the leftist party CPM (CPM) have completely distanced themselves from this general meeting. This meeting, which is taking place amid internal strife and loss of power from the hands of two key allies, is no less than a big test for the existence of the alliance.
Mamta and Akhilesh reached Delhi, but absence of three big allies increased Congress’s tension.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee have already camped in Delhi to participate in the general meeting of 23 parties called under the leadership of Congress. As soon as she reached Delhi, Mamata Banerjee first met Aam Aadmi Party convenor Arvind Kejriwal, which created a stir in the political circles. In this meeting, leaders of many regional parties including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, RJD youth leader Tejashwi Yadav and Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray are attending. However, political analysts believe that the absence of AAP, DMK and the Left has dulled the shine of this meeting and it has now become a big challenge for the Congress to prove its leadership.
Congress accused of ‘betrayal’, DMK enraged by TVK’s entry in Tamil Nadu
The biggest and main reason for this rift in the alliance is related to the politics of Tamil Nadu. In fact, in Tamil Nadu, Congress has given a big blow to DMK and has hinted at creating new equations with actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party TVK. Angered by this, DMK has directly accused Congress of ‘betrayal’ and has completely boycotted the meeting. The top leadership of DMK clearly says that Congress has completely failed to give a tough challenge to BJP at the national level, in such a situation there does not seem to be much benefit in going with them. On the other hand, Left parties in Kerala (CPM) have accused Congress of having internal collusion with BJP in the state, due to which CPM also thought it better to distance itself from this meeting in Delhi.
Brainstorming on the reasons for the defeat and future agenda, a big meeting of the opposition clan is being held after 2 years
Let us tell you that the last formal meeting of the opposition alliance was held on June 1, just before the general elections of 2024. Since then, within the last two years, the scenario of Indian politics and the equations of the states have completely changed. This is why the agenda of today’s meeting includes preparing a common strategy for the upcoming state assembly elections as well as brainstorming deeply on the reasons for the crushing defeat suffered by the opposition in Bengal, Assam and other states. However, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh has claimed that 23 important parties are still participating in this meeting and the alliance will move forward with full strength, but the ground reality is telling something else.
The opposition is struggling with the rebellion of its own people and infighting, there is a huge ruckus in Mamata’s TMC too.
The challenges for the alliance are not limited to just the departure of allies, but the internal situation of the parties attending the meeting is also very delicate. Even though Mamata Banerjee is attending this meeting to show herself strong at the national level after suffering a major setback in the recent Bengal elections, her own party Trinamool Congress (TMC) is currently going through the worst internal strife. According to reports, 58 out of 80 TMC MLAs have rebelled, due to which the party has had to hastily elect Ritabrata Banerjee as the Leader of Opposition in the House. In such a situation, it will be very interesting to see how the Congress Party, surrounded by the rebellion of its own people, internal divisions and regional ambitions, is able to save the ‘India’ alliance from disintegrating through this general meeting.
