Why is the festival of Govardhan Puja celebrated?
According to the legend, the people of Braj used to worship Indra Dev to please him. Then Lord Krishna explained to him that Indra Dev only rains, while our cows get fodder and we get fruits and vegetables from Govardhan Parvat. Therefore, we should worship Govardhan Parvat, not Indra. The Brajwasis started worshiping Govardhan by obeying Krishna.
This enraged Indra Dev and started raining fierce rain on Braj. Then to save the Brajwasis, Shri Krishna picked up the entire Govardhan Parvat on his little finger and all the Brajwasis took refuge under him for 7 days. Seeing his defeat, Indra Dev realized his mistake and apologized to Shri Krishna. Since then, the tradition of Govardhan Puja has been going on.
