The Indian Coast Guard rescued the cargo ship MV ITT Puma which was sinking on the way from Kolkata to Port Blair. The Coast Guard saved the lives of people in the rescue operation on Sunday night. It was challenging for the Coast Guard to carry out search and rescue operations in the darkness of the night.
The sinking of a cargo ship going from Kolkata to Port Blair occurred when the ship was about 90 nautical miles south of West Bengal. The Chennai-based Marine Search and Rescue Coordination Centre received the signal of the incident late in the evening of 25 August. Following this, the ICG Regional Headquarters in Kolkata immediately dispatched two ICG ships and a Dornier aircraft to the spot.
