Chain Pulling: What is its correct use?

Emergency alarm chains are installed in all passenger trains of Indian Railways. Its purpose is to stop the train immediately in an emergency.
In these circumstances it is appropriate to pull chain:

• Train fire situation
• Serious incident like theft or attack
• A child, elderly or sick person should be left out of boarding the train
• A passenger’s health suddenly deteriorates

Pulling the chain in such emergency situations is the right of the passengers and it is considered part of the security system.

The misuse of chain pulling is a punishable offense

Many people draw chains without reason for entertainment or personal selfishness, which not only hinders train operations, but also threatens the safety of other passengers.
Under Section 141 of Indian Railway Act, 1989:

• On the chain pulling without valid reason
  • A fine of ₹ 1000,
  • Or a year jail,
  • Or both can be punished.

This rule has been made so that emergency services are not misused and the operations of the railways continue to run smoothly.

Responsibility of passengers

During the train journey:

• Passengers should follow railway guidelines
• Before pulling the chain, make sure that the situation is really emergency
• Avoid misuse so that an innocent traveler does not have trouble and does not spoil the experience of travel
