Why is Govardhan Puja performed?

There is a very famous story of Lord Krishna behind this festival. In the Dwapar era, the people of Braj used to worship Lord Indra to please him. Then Lord Krishna explained to the people of Braj that our real deity is Govardhan Mountain, who nourishes us by giving us fruits, vegetables and fodder for our animals, hence we should not worship Indradev but Govardhan Mountain.

When the people of Braj started worshiping Govardhan Mountain, Indradev became angry and started torrential rains. Then Lord Krishna lifted the entire Govardhan mountain on his little finger and protected all the Braj people and animals. This tradition of Govardhan Puja has been going on since that day.

On this day, people make a replica of Govardhan Mountain in their homes with cow dung, worship it and offer ‘Annakoot’, which is prasad made by mixing different types of vegetables. This festival teaches us that we should always be grateful to nature.
