The atmosphere of mourning is often filled with silence and tears, but seeing what happened this week at Brijghat in Hapur district of western UP, people are not able to decide whether to laugh or be surprised. There was a funeral pyre on one side, four people were mourning, but when the shroud of the ‘corpse’ was removed, what was found inside was not a human being, but a plastic effigy!

This is not the story of any crime thriller web series, but a real incident which stunned the Hapur police as well as everyone present there.

How was the secret revealed? This is how the tables turned on the crematorium

On Thursday afternoon, an i20 car with HR number reached Brijghat. Four people got out of the car, with deep sadness on their faces and a dead body (which was wrapped in a shroud) on their shoulders. He talked to Panditji, bought wood, arranged for ghee – everything seemed absolutely normal. Crematorium employee Nitin felt that these people were grieving the loss of a loved one.

But things went wrong when these people started showing too much haste. There is a ritual in our society that before lighting the pyre, the face of the deceased is shown for the last time. Some people present there and the Pandit said, “Brother, show your face at least once.”

These four ‘mourners’ kept refusing again and again, making excuses to hurry up. From here the suspicion deepened. When people stubbornly removed the shroud, there was no human being there. A mannequin was lying in a pile of clothes. As soon as this was seen, there was a commotion there.

Real game: greed of 50 lakhs

As soon as the poll opened, a crowd gathered and the police were called. Taking advantage of the opportunity, two of the four accused escaped, but two—Delhi cloth merchants Kamal Somani and Ashish Khurana—were caught. When his car was searched, two more mannequins were found there. That means the preparation was complete!

When the police interrogated Kamal Somani, he spilled out all the secrets like a parrot. The story was such that Somani had a huge debt of Rs 50 lakh. To get rid of this debt, he had taken an insurance policy of Rs 50 lakh from ‘Tata AIA’. The interesting thing is that he had taken the policy not in his own name, but in the name of his acquaintance ‘Anshul’, whose documents were kept with him.

The plan was this: fake Anshul’s death, get his death certificate made from the cremation ground and then get away with a claim of Rs 50 lakh from the insurance company.

Anshul was having fun in Prayagraj!

The most interesting part of this drama came when the police, to investigate, made a video call to the ‘deceased’ Anshul, whose last rites were allegedly being performed. Anshul picked up the call and told the police that he was absolutely safe and happy with his family in Prayagraj. He had no idea that some people in Hapur were trying to get his insurance by ‘killing’ him.

At present, the police have registered a case of cheating and conspiracy against the accused. Inspector Manoj Balyan and his team are searching for the remaining absconding accused. This incident proved one thing—greed can make a person do anything, even cremate plastic effigies!
