India has been actively striving for permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) over the years. In this direction, India along with Germany, Japan and Brazil have also campaigned under the G4 Group. Recently, when Turkish President Erdogan demanded permanent membership to Muslim countries, India rejected it outright. Now India has received a positive indication from the United Nations.
Consideration of UNSC expansion, India becomes major contenders
On 17 April 2025, the Economics Tariq Albanai, the President of the Interior Dialogue (IGN), indicated that if the Security Council expands, India would definitely be its main contender if the Security Council expands. In the press conference, Albanai said, “If UNSC is to be really to make a global representation platform, then the voice of every country should be heard. India is a big and important nation today and cannot be ignored.”
Kuwait supports India
Kuwait’s permanent representative Tariq Albanai said that his country supports India’s permanent membership claim. He also informed that if the number of member countries of the Security Council is increased from 21 to 27, India will be among the most prominent contenders in that list. He also remembered that in 2024 he visited India with Austrian co-president Ambassador Alexander Marshik, where he had a high-level discussion about UNSC reforms.
Opposition between China and Pakistan continues
While India is getting support from permanent member countries like America, France and Russia, China and Pakistan are opposing it. Pakistan does not want the Security Council to expand, so that the path of India can be opened. At the same time, China fears that India’s permanent membership may reduce its strategic domination in Asia.
India and G4 groups have already made it clear that the idea of permanent membership on the basis of religion in the Security Council is unacceptable.
India’s growing role and global identity
India is one of the largest economies in the world today and has been notable its participation in international peace campaigns, climate change, digital development, global health and technological progress. In such a situation, giving permanent membership to India in a global institution like the United Nations will make the world representation more equitable and balanced.
