New Delhi: Seven important agreements were signed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Sri Lanka. Many issues including defense, energy, development of temples were agreed. The two countries signed several important agreements, including increasing defense cooperation and developing Tinkomali as an energy center.
Major agreements signed between the two include the implementation of HVDC interconnection for electricity imports and exports, cooperation in sharing successful digital solutions for digital changes, cooperation in the health sector and cooperation in pharmacopia.
Additionally, Bharat will provide financial assistance for the thiruxoneshwaram temple in Tinkomali, Sita Eliya Temple in Nuwara Elia and the holy city complex in Anuradhapura. On the International Vaishakh Day 2025, there were agreements regarding the exhibition of Lord Buddha’s remains in Sri Lanka. Along with this, India agreed to convert the loan given to Sri Lanka into a grant.
In addition, the two leaders inaugurated a warehouse with a capacity of five thousand metric tons in Dambula. He also inaugurated five thousand solar roof establishments at all religious places in all 25 districts of Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka honored Prime Minister Modi with the country’s highest honor friend Vibhushan. This is the 22nd international honor given by any country to Prime Minister Modi.
This defense agreement between the two countries is being seen as an important agreement reached four decades later. Apart from this, India has signed a tripartite agreement between India-Sri Lanka and UAE in Sri Lanka. Under this agreement, multi-product pipeline, oil tank farm and logistics infrastructure will be developed. Thus, India-UAE will work jointly to get cooperation in the energy sector in Sri Lanka. The United Arab Emirates is India’s energy partner.
