Iltija Mufti, daughter of People's Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti, on Tuesday became the third generation leader of the Mufti family to contest elections. Iltija filed her nomination as a PDP candidate from Bijbehara assembly seat, which is the party's stronghold in Jammu and Kashmir. Iltija Mufti filed her nomination for the Bijbehara assembly seat along with her mother Mehbooba Mufti and hundreds of supporters. For the last four times, this seat has been represented by her family's close leader Abdul Rehman Veeri.
Speaking to reporters after filing her nomination, Iltija Mufti said she would raise the issue of “injustice and oppression of the people of Kashmir” in the assembly. “I have always stood by the truth and will continue to do so,” she said.
Iltija Mufti said that this was a very emotional moment for her as her mother Mehbooba Mufti and grandfather Mufti Mohammad Sayeed were also contesting elections from Bijbehara seat for the first time. Sayeed had won this seat in South Kashmir in 1962, while Mehbooba Mufti entered electoral politics by winning this seat in 1996.
