“Sir, your lottery has won,” “Your parcel has arrived, but the address is wrong,”… these sweet words coming on the phone these days can make your life’s earnings go away in an instant.
Cyber thieves have become so clever that they are devising new ways to cheat every day. In view of this, ‘Cyber Dost’, the cyber safety department of the Home Ministry, has issued a serious warning to all the smartphone users of the country.
What is this new and most dangerous ‘call forwarding’ scam?
This is the newest and most dangerous phone fraud ever.
- How it happens: Fraudsters call you on some pretext (like lottery, KYC update or benefit of any government scheme) and send a special *USSD code (eg 401#) Asks to dial.
- And game over! As soon as you dial this code, all the calls coming to your phone start going to the thieves’ number.
- Biggest threat: After this, the OTP of your bank account, the code to change the password of social media, everything starts reaching the thieves directly. And then they can empty your bank account in seconds.
‘Brahmastra’ of rescue: Dial this one code immediately!
If you have even the slightest suspicion that your call is going to someone else, don’t panic.
- Simply go to your phone’s dialer and immediately dial this ‘magic code’: ##002#
- This is a code that stops all types of call forwarding on your phone in one go.
For your safety, change these 3 settings in your phone today.
- The lure of free Wi-Fi can prove costly: Before using free Wi-Fi at any station, café or mall, go to your phone’s Wi-Fi settings and turn off ‘Auto-Join’. With this, your phone will not connect to any dangerous Wi-Fi without asking.
- Catch your phone’s ‘spy’: Go to your phone’s Settings, go to ‘Permission Manager’ and check which apps are unnecessarily using your camera, mic or contacts. Whoever you suspect, remove his permission immediately.
- Don’t be tempted: Do not dial any number that starts with * or # from your phone when asked by any unknown person.
What if you get cheated?
- The Ministry has clearly stated that no government agency or bank asks for money over phone by threatening arrest (digital arrest). This is 100% fraud.
- In case of any kind of online fraud, call the helpline number 1930 without any delay or register your complaint on cybercrime.gov.in.
Remember, a little awareness can save your hard-earned money from being looted.
