According to reports, criminals are getting the SIM card illegally by misusing the identity and personal information of Indian citizens. These SIM cards are being used later to carry out various types of cyber fraud, causing serious problems such as financial loss and theft of innocent people.
These frauds include often cases such as fishing scams, one-time password (OTP) theft, banking fraud and even selling individuals on the dark web. Criminals issue SIM cards using someone’s identity, which gives them access to online accounts and bank transactions connected to that number. This increases the risk of users to be emptied and there is also a risk of their personal information being made public.
To deal with this growing problem, the Government of India has taken some tough steps. The Department of Telecommunications (DOT) and police agencies have started a campaign to tighten it. These steps include further hardening the SIM card issuing process, strengthening the verification of Aadhaar and other identity documents, and increasing the monitoring of suspected SIM connections. Customers have also been advised to be cautious by any misuse of their base or identity documents and report any suspicious activity immediately on telecom providers or cyber crime helpline. Using strong passwords for all your online accounts and keeping two-factor authentication active is also extremely important to prevent fraud. This awareness and activism is the biggest weapon to prevent this rising danger.
