High Court is strict, when will the potholes on the roads of Ranchi be fixed? Answer sought from government within a week

News India Live, Digital Desk: Jharkhand High Court Chief Justice M.S. The division bench of Justice Sonak and Justice Rajesh Shankar has expressed deep displeasure over the dilapidated roads and serious condition of drainage of Ranchi city. During the hearing held on Thursday (5 February 2026), the court gave clear instructions to the state government to tell through an affidavit as to when the repair work of the city roads will be completed.

1. Strict comments and instructions of the court

The court, suo motu, raised the following points on the poor condition of the city:

Repair Timeline: The court asked what ‘deadline’ do the government and the municipal corporation have to repair the dilapidated roads?

Affidavit Instructions: The state government has been asked to inform within a week on which roads work has started and which schemes are still on paper.

Reference to Municipal Elections: The Court also noted that the condition of roads and infrastructure remains the biggest issue for the public during the municipal elections.

2. In which areas the situation is worst?

According to the details brought to the notice of the petitioner and the court, about 50,000 people Are forced to live without basic roads and drainage. The worst affected areas are:

Bariatu, Ratu Road, and Birsa Chowk.

Harmu Road, Kishoreganj, and Morhabadi.

Kanke Road, Doranda, Pundag, and Argora.

Special mention: The situation is extremely hellish in colonies like Argora to Naya Sarai Marg and Rajendra Nagar, Siddhivinayak Nagar.

3. Questions on Sewerage & Drainage also

Along with the roads, the court has also sought answers on the sewerage system of the city. The court was told that even in light rain, the main roads and streets of the city become ponds, due to which accidents occur every day. The court has asked the Urban Development Department and the Road Construction Department to jointly find a solution to this problem.

4. Next hearing: 26 February

High Court for next hearing of the case 26 February 2026 The date has been set. On that day the government will have to present its progress report. The court has warned that if satisfactory progress is not seen, strict orders can be passed against the officials.
