If you are one of those taxpayers whose accounts are required to be audited, then there is a big news for you. The last date to file income tax return (ITR), September 15, is now coming closer and this time the government is not in the mood to pursue it forward. The Revenue Secretary has made it clear that taxpayers should now give up the habit of waiting for the dates to increase.
This simply means that you will have to file your ITR by September 15, 2025. The government wants all the tax related work to be completed on time, so that the economic system of the country continues smoothly.
Which people are for 15 September deadline?
This is not the last date for everyone. This is mainly for those and institutions whose audit of accounts is mandatory under the Income Tax Act. These include:
- Businessmen: People or firms whose turnover is more than a certain range.
- Professionals: Such professionals (eg doctors, lawyers) whose income is more than a fixed limit.
The last date to file ITR for common employed people was 31 July, which has now left.
Why will the date not increase?
The government believes that by increasing the dates repeatedly, the entire process of tax collection is delayed. Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra made it clear in a statement that the government now wants to change this culture. They want people to take their tax related responsibilities seriously and file their returns on time.
If you miss, what will happen?
If you miss the deadline of September 15, you may have to suffer serious consequences:
- Heavy fines: Filling ITRs can impose a fine of up to Rs 5,000.
- Interest burden: If you have a tax outstanding, then you will also have to pay interest for the delay period on it.
- Will not be able to take the loss forward: You will not be able to adjust the loss in business or stock market with next year’s profits.
Therefore, do not wait for the last day. To increase the load on the server or to avoid any technical disturbance, file your ITR today. Become a sensible taxpayer and fulfill your responsibility on time.
