If you live in those areas of Gorakhpur where it is a common thing for roads to become ponds every year during the rainy season, then this news has brought great relief for you. The Municipal Corporation has started work on a mega project to root out this oldest and biggest problem of three wards of the city.
A 12.36 km long concrete (RCC) drain will be built from Gulriha police station to Chiluatal at a huge cost of ₹107 crore. This huge drain is being built under the ‘Urban Flood and Storm Water Drainage Scheme’ launched by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, whose direct objective is to free the cities from waterlogging.
Which areas will get relief?
In a way, this drain will prove to be a ‘lifeline’ for these areas. It will start from Gulriha police station and will pass through densely populated areas like Kanchanpur intersection, Puraina Pulia, Bajrah Pulia, Mirzapur and fall in Chiluatal. After the completion of this project, more than 50,000 people living in these areas will get permanent relief from the problem of water supply every year.
How powerful will this drain be?
This will not be any ordinary drain. According to officials, its capacity will be 3,200 million liters per day (MLD). If understood in simple language, it will be so powerful that it will flush out heavy rain water as well as sewerage water from houses and streets rapidly without any obstruction.
During its construction, all the small drains will be connected to it and its slope will be set scientifically, so that there is no possibility of water stagnation in future.
Future planning is also ready
The Municipal Corporation is making this project not just according to today’s needs, but also keeping the future in mind. There are also plans to connect this drain to the drainage system of upcoming big projects of Gorakhpur Development Authority (GDA), such as Rapti Township and Sports City.
Municipal Commissioner Gaurav Singh Sogarwal has given clear instructions that while building the drain, not only the current population but also the increasing population and water flow in the coming 50 years should be kept in mind.
After the completion of this project, the drainage system of the northern part of Gorakhpur will completely change and people will get relief forever from the problems faced during rainy season every year.
