But the bitter reality is that many big national highways of our country are still full of such ‘black spots’ (where there is no network at all). Often the range of mobile towers gets lost while passing through deserted roads or forested areas.
In view of this problem, NHAI has prepared a new policy for telecom companies.
Now towers will stand on the highway side
NHAI’s simple plan is that the vacant land along the highway will be used for erecting mobile towers and laying optical fiber cables (OFC). Till now, what used to happen was that private companies used to find their own place to set up towers, in which they had to face a lot of paper work and legal hurdles. Now the government itself will provide them space and resources, so that there is no gap in mobile connectivity on the National Highway.

Seamless connectivity on the highway does not just mean running Facebook or Instagram. If, God forbid, the car breaks down on the way or a medical emergency occurs, then not having a phone at that time can cost your life. With this step of NHAI, you will never be ‘out of coverage’ even on deserted roads.

NHAI is now working towards ‘Digital Highway’. Under this, separate ‘utility corridors’ are being built for laying fiber cables. The biggest benefit of this will be to those running 5G. The 5G speed which was limited to the rooms in cities, will now continue to be available to you even on long drives.
When will the work be done?
Work on the policy has started and such preparations are visible on many big national highways like Delhi-Mumbai Expressway or big greenfield projects. It is expected that in the next few months, complaints of call drops and network disconnection on any major highway of India will become a thing of the past.
