If you are one of those people who were worried about the last date for filing Income Tax Return (ITR), then there is a big relief news for you. The government has extended the last date for filing ITR for the financial year 2024-25 (assessment year 2025-26). Now those paying taxes have got time till December 10, 2025.

This decision has been taken by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). Also, for taxpayers whose accounts are audited, the last date for submission of audit report has also been extended to November 10, 2025. This news has brought relief to lakhs of people who were not able to file their returns till now due to festivals, lack of time or the lengthy audit process.

Now additional extension of 40 days, but for whom?

Earlier, people whose accounts are audited had to file their ITR by October 31, 2025, but now they have been given 40 more days. CBDT has taken this step after persistent demand from tax filers, chartered accountants and tax professionals so that everyone gets an opportunity to complete their work properly.

Generally, the last date to file ITR for employers or small businessmen is 31st July. So, if your accounts are not audited, this date is not for you.

Why did the government take this decision?

CBDT said in its press release that due to the festive season and the time taken in the audit process, many people and professionals were not able to file returns on time. Keeping in view their problems, this decision was taken, so that people can file their returns correctly without any haste.

What if there is a delay?

CBDT has clarified that returns filed till December 10, 2025 will be considered timely filed and no late fee or penalty will be imposed on it. But if someone files his return after this date, he may have to pay penalty under section 234F of Income Tax.
