Vijayanagar: A case of major digital robbery has come to light in Vijayanagar district of Karnataka. This robbery has been committed in a bank. Hackers have stolen Rs 2.34 crore from the reputed Ballari District Cooperative Central (BDCC) Bank.
This bank operates in Vijayanagara and Ballari districts. The bank’s RTGS/NEFT transaction system was targeted in the film-style robbery.
Preliminary investigation revealed that during the regulation transfer of funds from BDCC Bank to IDBI Bank on January 10, 2025, hackers managed to change the account numbers and IFSC codes in the XML files generated for the transaction.
While the names of the beneficiaries remained the same. In this case the funds were deposited into 25 different accounts in various northern states of India instead of the intended beneficiary.
This case of major fraud came to light on January 13, 2025, when several branches of the bank said that the RTGS transfer on January 10 had not yet reached people’s accounts.
The bank’s investigation revealed that an amount of Rs 5 lakh was withdrawn during these transactions. The bank management immediately suspended RTGS/NEFT services and lodged a complaint at the police station.
