The strength of the Indian Air Force is going to increase soon. The central government has approved the purchase of 156 light combat helicopters (LCH) ‘Prachanda’ on Friday, 28 March 2025. This decision was taken in a meeting of the Cabinet Security Committee. The Ministry of Defense has signed two major agreements worth Rs 62,700 crore with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for this.

Air Force will get ‘Prachand’ helicopters

Out of these 156 fierce helicopters, 66 helicopters will be available to the Indian Air Force, while the Indian Army will get 90 helicopters. These helicopters will be deployed on the borders adjacent to Pakistan and China. Helicopters will be constructed at plants in Bengaluru and Tumkur. The supply of helicopters will start from the third year of the contract and it will continue for the next 5 years.

Helicopter characteristics

The fierce helicopter is India’s first indigenously developed and designed helicopter. It is capable of fighting at an altitude of more than 5,000 meters. This helicopter equipped with missiles can attack the ground and air to air. The fiery fighter helicopters can become enemies in the high mountainous areas of Ladakh, Siachen and Arunachal Pradesh. Its maximum speed is 463 kilometers per hour. It is equipped with a 20 millimeter noz gun and a 7-milimeter rocket pod. Laser warning systems, missile approach warning systems and radar warning receiver further enhance its strength.

Employment opportunity

The construction of a fierce helicopter is planned to use more than 65 percent indigenous goods, which will include more than 250 domestic companies. Most of these will be small and medium industries (MSME). After this agreement, more than 8,500 job opportunities will open, which will increase India’s defense industry and employment significantly.
