Delhi EV policy draft: CNG rickshaws may be closed soon in Delhi. The state government’s upcoming electric vehicle (EV) Policy 2.0 has been ordered not to register CNG -driven rickshaws from 15 August 2025, promoting electric vehicles. Notification will be issued soon in this regard. In addition, CNG auto rickshaw permits will not be renewed. Along with this, registration of petrol-diesel, CNG two-wheelers will also be stopped from 15 August 2026. Due to pollution from petrol and diesel, one lakh auto rickshaws run in Delhi. Earlier, only 55,000 auto rickshaws were allowed.
Order on 10 year old CNG rickshaw
In the draft policy, a provision has been made to replace the 10 -year -old CNG rickshaw with an essentially electrical rickshaw. This step will boost clean mobility solution in the city.
Electrification of government vehicles
Apart from autorickshaw, efforts are also being made to electrify petrol and diesel-powered government vehicles. In which all vehicles including all petrol-diesel and CNG-run waste collection vehicles used by the Municipal Corporation will be converted into electric by 31 December 2027.
Major recommendations made in the draft EV policy:
- There will be no new CNG auto rickshaw registration in Delhi after 15 August 2025
- All CNG auto permits will be renewed only till 15 August 2025
- Petrol-diesel, CNG two-wheelers will not be registered from 15 August 2026
- All waste collection vehicles will be converted into electric vehicles in a phased manner.
- 100 % electric target by 31 December 2027, electric buses will be purchased
- Car owners who have 2 cars will be able to buy only third e-car
- Only electric buses will be purchased, BS-VI buses will be used only for inter-state transport.
This draft will be approved soon.
This draft policy will be sent to all stakeholders for recommendations. The recommendations will then be considered and presented before the cabinet. This policy will be implemented after approval from the Cabinet of Delhi Government.
