News India Live, Digital Desk: Election of the Next Vice President of India: The tenure of the current Vice President of India, Honorable M. Venkaiah Naidu ends on August 10 this year. Along with this, the constitutional process of holding the country for its next Vice President is going to start soon. Article 68 (1) of the Indian Constitution clearly determines that it is mandatory to elect the Vice President, before the term of the outgoing Vice President ends. This means that this election process will be completed by late July or early August. The Vice President in India is elected by a special electoral college. Members of this electoral college are all elected and nominated MPs who represent both houses of Parliament, Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. The important thing is that in this election, members (MLAs) of the Legislature of the states do not participate, which makes it different from the presidential election where the MLAs of the states also vote. Currently, there are 543 members in the Lok Sabha and 237 members in the Rajya Sabha, some seats are also vacant. Thus, in this election, about 780 MPs will exercise their franchise. A person filing nomination for the post of Vice President should be a citizen of India, should have 35 years of age and should have the ability to be elected a member of Rajya Sabha. The Election Commission will soon announce the election dates and release the election program in detail. Once the election notification is released, various political parties will choose their candidates, and India’s democratic system will choose its next leader for this important constitutional post. This process is not only a constitutional formality, but also plays an important role in ensuring the smooth transfer and stability of power in the democratic structure of the country.
