New Delhi: Enforcement Directorate (ED) will return assets worth about Rs 15,000 crore to real estate, Ponzi and other fraud victims across the country during the current financial year. Officials gave this information in a statement. Documents suggest that the Federal Investigation Agency began to implement this provision of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act to refund the assets available last year to ensure that financial crimes could return their rights to the legitimate owners and right contenders victims of fraud.
Under this provision, between 2019-21, a total of Rs 31,951 crore has been withdrawn to the victims of fraud in three money laundering cases related to fugitive economic criminals Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi in the National Spot Exchange Limited (NSEL) case.
Officials said that in June last year, ED Director Rahul Naveen had made a comprehensive review of all the cases of money laundering where the property of the victims of fraud could be refunded.
According to the data, ED recovered assets worth Rs 15,261.15 crore (financial year 2024-25) and Rs 1488 crore during the current financial year (2025-26) from August 2024 to April 2025.
Officials said the ED chief has recently issued instructions to all the regional offices of the agency to work actively on marked cases for recovery of assets worth Rs 15,000 crore during FY 2025-26.
Under the current plan of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the competent court can order the process of returning the property of innocent investors before the hearing in any case.
