The process of changing the names of places and institutions continues in Uttar Pradesh. In this episode, the demand to change the name of Aligarh railway station is also gaining momentum. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Satish Gautam from Aligarh has demanded to name Aligarh railway station after Veer Shiromani ‘Maharana Pratap’. This demand was going on for a long time and now it has been raised again.
Actually, MP Satish Gautam has also written a letter in this regard to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav. In his letter, he emphasized the historical and social identity of Aligarh and said that the people here have been demanding this change for a long time. He believes that changing the name of Aligarh will increase historical and cultural importance and it will conform to people’s feelings.
Gautam said that earlier also the District Panchayat has demanded to change the name of the station in the name of ‘Harigarh’, but now he is personally in favor of keeping it in the name of Maharana Pratap. He claimed that an old name of Aligarh city has also been ‘Harigarh’, but Maharana Pratap was a warrior who showed indomitable courage and valor for the nation, and to name the station after him would be a true tribute.
For some time, the names of many historical and symbolic cities and stations have been changed by the Yogi government in Uttar Pradesh. These include renaming Allahabad to ‘Prayagraj’ and ‘Ayodhya’ to change the name of Faizabad to ‘Ayodhya’. On the same lines, the name of Mughalsarai railway station was changed to ‘Deendayal Upadhyay Junction’. The government’s argument behind changing the name is that they want to prioritize the names associated with the culture and heritage of India, which are not related to colonialism or Muslim rule.
This new demand to change the name of Aligarh station will definitely give rise to debate, but if this demand is met, it will prove to be another important link to the name change in Uttar Pradesh.
