Delhi trembles, UP-Haryana shivers: Mercury drops to 5.7 degrees, Meteorological Department rings alarm bells

Delhi weather news today: As soon as December started, cold has started showing its true colors. If you live in Delhi-NCR, you must have felt the icy coldness of the air in the last two days. The situation is such that now even before coming out of the quilt one has to think ten times.

The weather of Delhi has changed suddenly and the mercury has fallen drastically. On Monday, the minimum temperature of the capital dropped to 5.7 degrees Celsius, which is about 4.6 degrees less than the normal temperature of this season. In view of this, India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued ‘Yellow Alert’ in Delhi. That is, there is little hope of relief right now and we will have to face cold wave in the next few days.

The torture of ‘cold wave’ will last for 11 days

Generally we see that severe cold lasts for 4 to 6 days and then there is some relief. But, the prediction made by IMD Director General Mrityunjay Mahapatra is scary. He said that this time the ‘cold wave’ is not going to go away soon. This time this period of winter may last for 11 days.

This time this deadly winter is happening due to ‘La Nina’. When La Nina conditions form in the Pacific Ocean, India experiences severe cold.

People of these states, keep your muffler-jackets ready!

The Meteorological Department has made it clear that the plains of North India will experience the maximum chill. If you live in these states, take special care of yourself:

  • Punjab and Haryana
  • Rajasthan
  • Uttar Pradesh
  • Madhya Pradesh
  • Maharashtra (Vidarbha and Marathwada regions)

In the months of December, January and February the day temperature here is going to be much lower than normal.

Surprising thing: Less winter in the mountains?

The weather mathematics is going a bit the other way this time. On one hand, while people are feeling shivering in the plains, the winter is expected to be ‘slightly less’ in the hilly and North-East areas.
According to IMD, the minimum temperature may be slightly ‘above normal’ in some parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim and Bihar-Jharkhand. That is, the mountains may not experience as severe cold as the plains. This time snowfall in the hilly areas is also likely to be less than average.
