The state government has taken a big step to remove the long-running shortage of sand in Jharkhand and the obstacles in construction work. The Mines and Geology Department has given Environmental Clearance (EC) to a total of 35 sand ghats in 10 districts of the state.
This approval will not only ensure availability of legal sand, but is also expected to significantly increase the revenue of the state. The total area of all these sanctioned ghats is 192.99 hectares.
Which district got how much share?
East Singhbhum has got the maximum benefit under this initiative of the state government, where despite less losses, the area is the highest. The details of sanctioned ghats in various districts are as follows:
| District | Number of sanctioned losses |
|---|---|
| East Singhbhum | 3 (Area: 85.40 hectares) |
| Bokaro | 2 (Area: 30.86 hectares) |
| Hazaribagh | 6 |
| Dumka | 5 |
| godda | 4 |
| Latehar | 4 |
| Ranchi (Silli) | 3 |
| jamtara | 3 |
| Ramgarh | 3 |
| peg | 2 |
Lease deed also signed in 5 districts
Taking the work forward rapidly at the administrative level, lease deeds for the respective sand ghats and stockyards have been signed by the Deputy Commissioners (DC) in Godda, Jamtara, Ranchi, Bokaro and Jamshedpur (East Singhbhum).
Annual Withdrawal Capacity: According to the guidelines of the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA), about 3.5 crore to 5 crore CFT of sand can be extracted annually from these ghats.
Benefits of this decision:
Acceleration in construction work: Easy availability of sand will speed up stalled government and private construction projects.
increase revenue: Due to legal sand mining, additional revenue will be deposited in the government treasury in the form of royalty.
Control on illegal mining: Operation of more number of legal ghats is likely to reduce the incidents of illegal sand excavation and black marketing.
