Indian Foreign Minister S.K. Jaishankar’s visit to China is seen as the beginning of improvement in relations between the two countries. What is the whole matter?
Earlier this month, the Tibetan Buddhist religious leader Dalai Lama celebrated his 90th birthday in Dharamshala. On this occasion, he clarified that China has no role in his succession. Several senior leaders including Indian Union Minister Kiren Rijiju attended the event. According to Tibetan belief, the soul of any senior Buddhist monk takes rebirth after death. However, China claims that the succession of the Dalai Lama requires the acceptance of its leaders.
Significantly, the Dalai Lama has been living a lifeless life in Dharamshala, India since 1959, from where he leads the exiled Tibetan government. There are about 70,000 Tibetan refugees in India, which gives India a political lead against China.
Chinese Embassy Comments
Chinese embassy spokesperson U Jing wrote on social media platform X, “Some people in India’s strategic and educational communities have made unfair comments about the rebirth of the Dalai Lama. As experts on foreign affairs, they should realize the sensitivity of issues related to Shijang (Tibet). Can.”
Impact on India-China relations
This incident took place at a time when Indian Foreign Minister S.K. Jaishankar is going to Tianzin in China on July 15, 2025 to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit. The yatra is the highest level meeting between the two countries since the deadly border struggle in Ladakh in 2020, killing 20 Indians and 4 Chinese soldiers. This warning can already complicate delicate relations between the two countries.
India’s attitude
India’s Foreign Ministry said before the Dalai Lama’s birthday on July 4, 2025, that New Delhi does not take or speak on issues of religion and faith. However, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, himself followers of Buddhism, has supported the statement of the Dalai Lama. He said that the Dalai Lama and his organization, Gaden Fodrang Trust have the right to decide on his succession.
