More than 100 flights were delayed due to a technical glitch in the air traffic control (ATC) system. Due to this, air travel was affected not only in Delhi but in the entire North India.
What happened suddenly that the flights stopped?
In fact, the ATC system itself, which guides planes, was not working properly in the morning. Imagine, what would happen if the system that works for traffic police in the sky gets damaged? That’s just what happened. To avoid any untoward incident, flights were not allowed to take off. The result was that many planes remained standing on the runway and passengers kept waiting.
People present at the airport said that the delay in flights had started from 5 in the morning. Suddenly the crowd at the airport increased and long queues formed at the boarding gate. Airlines companies were continuously asking passengers to be patient, but it was natural for people to get upset due to the delay of hours.
The work was done manually, hence there was a lot of delay.
When ATC’s automatic system failed, air traffic controllers had to prepare flight plans manually. This took a lot of time, due to which flights got delayed one after the other. Big airlines like IndiGo and Air India also informed their passengers about this and advised them to stay in touch for updates.
However, officials continued to work on fixing the system and passengers were assured that everything would soon be back to normal. But this incident has once again raised the question that how justified is our dependence on technology in air travel and do we have a better backup plan for such emergency situations?
