The central government has extended the deadline for filing monthly GST sales return (GSTR-1) and GST payment by two days after taxpayers complained of technical glitches in the GST Network (GSTN).

  • The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) gave this information by issuing a notification.
  • The new last date for filing GSTR-1 for December 2023 has been set as January 13.
  • This date will now be January 15 for taxpayers opting for quarterly payments under the QRMP scheme (Quarterly Returns with Monthly Payments).

When is GSTR-1 filed?

  • The due date for GSTR-1 for monthly return filers is January 11.
  • For quarterly taxpayers this date is January 13.

Change in deadline:

  • The existing deadline for GSTR-3B (GST payment) for December has been extended from January 20 to January 22.
  • For taxpayers paying GST on quarterly basis, this date has been extended to January 24 and January 26 (depending on state-wise registration).

Technical glitches in GSTN system

GSTN had reported technical problems in the system to the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC).

  • Taxpayers had complained that they were unable to generate a summary of GSTR-1 and file returns.
