But this Pukalam in a temple in Kollam district became the reason for a major controversy. Here, two groups clashed over making Rangoli with the shape of ‘Bharat Mata’ and ‘Shivling’, after which the police have registered a case against 27 activists associated with RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh).
What is the whole matter?
The incident is of Shri Baidyanath Swamy Temple in Pavomba in Kollam district. On the occasion of Onam, according to tradition, Pukalam was to be built in the temple. The RSS workers wanted to make a puja with the designed ‘Bharat Mata’ and ‘Shivling’ there.
But some members and locals of the temple administration (Thiruvitakur Devaswom Board) objected to this. He said that there is no permission to design any political or religious signs inside the temple. He said that Pukalam should be traditional and plain.
How did the controversy increase?
When RSS workers continued to make their designed Rangoli, the other group opposed it. On seeing this, a debate started on both sides, which soon turned into a scuffle and clash. As soon as the information was received, the police reached the spot and controlled the situation.
The police have registered a case against 27 people in sections such as disturbing peace, trying to incite riot and obstructing government officials. All these accused are said to be RSS workers. Police say that further investigation is being done in this case.
There is an atmosphere of tension in the area since this incident. On the one hand, while one faction is calling it an expression of its faith and nationalism, the other faction is considering it as violation of temple traditions and interference of politics.
