On Monday, April 6, the Supreme Court issued a class order to West Bengal Chief Secretary Dushyant Nariyala. The case dates back to April 1, when a mob had taken judicial officers hostage in Malda. Expressing displeasure, the bench of CGI Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice Vipul M. Pancholi said that at the time of crisis, the Chief Secretary did not even pick up the call of the Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court. The court termed this as a huge failure of the district administration and directed the Chief Secretary to tender an unconditional apology to the Chief Justice of the High Court for this behaviour.
Malda case: NIA will interrogate 26 accused, court strict on ‘politics’
Describing the incident as a ‘planned conspiracy’, the Supreme Court ordered that the 26 people arrested by the police should now be arrested. National Investigation Agency (NIA) Will interrogate. Seven judicial officers, including three women, were held hostage by the angry mob for more than 9 hours in the Kaliachak BDO office. When they were rescued, their vehicles were attacked with stones, bricks and sticks.
Show cause notice to ADM: Accused of addressing protesters
Malda Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Sheikh Ansar Ahmed is also now on the radar. District Magistrate Rajanveer Singh Kapoor has issued two notices to him. It is alleged that while on duty, Ahmed not only addressed the protesters without permission but also made promises to them which were beyond his jurisdiction. He had assured to extend the date of SIR contrary to the instructions of the Election Commission and the Supreme Court. The administration has taken this strict step after his video went viral on social media.
Administrative turmoil in Bengal: Naihati police station in-charge suspended
Action at the administrative level was not limited to Malda only. The in-charge of Naihati police station of North 24 Parganas has also been suspended. He is accused of escorting the Naihati Municipality President to the SDO office in a police vehicle in support of the TMC candidate during the nomination process. This action has been taken after the video shared by BJP leader Arjun Singh.
