BS-VI vehicles in Delhi-NCR will also be banned with age limit, hearing in Supreme Court on 28 July

New Delhi: Amid efforts to control air pollution in the National Capital Region (NCR), now the question has arisen whether the new vehicles that follow advanced emission standards like BS-VI (BS-6) will also apply 15 years for old petrol vehicles and 10 years fixed life limit for diesel vehicles. This important issue will be heard on July 28, 2025 in the Supreme Court of India.

Challenge the old rules:
The petitioners argue that since BS-VI is more effective in reducing standard pollution, it would be unfair to implement the old laws on these modern technology vehicles. They want the Supreme Court to give clear instructions in this case, so that the government cannot implement new rules bypassing previous court decisions. In view of the urgency of the case, Chief Justice BR Gawai and Justice K.K. The bench of Vinod Chandran has agreed to hear the petition soon.

Current rules and orders of NGT:
Currently, the age limit of vehicles in Delhi-NCR is fixed: 10 years for diesel vehicles and 15 years for petrol vehicles. This rule was issued in 2015 by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) with the aim of reducing pollution. Now it will be important to see whether the Supreme Court gives BS-VI vehicles exempted from this age limit.
