UK Travel Advice India 2025: The British government has issued a new travel advisory for its citizens living in India or planning to travel to India. This advisory, updated on November 10, 2025, contains serious safety warnings for parts of India. In particular, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has advised that travel to the India-Pakistan border, Kashmir Valley and Manipur state should be strictly avoided.
Border area declared dangerous
The FCDO has clearly stated that British citizens should not travel within 10 kilometers of the India-Pakistan border, as the area has been declared unsafe. Travel restrictions have been imposed in most parts of Jammu and Kashmir, with only air travel allowed to and from Jammu city. The advisory states that the security situation in this area can deteriorate at any time, so travelers should exercise extreme caution.
Warning issued for tourist places of Kashmir also
It has also been advised not to travel to popular tourist destinations like Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg and Srinagar city. Security forces have increased checking on movement on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. FCDO said that the situation in Kashmir Valley is volatile and violent incidents can happen suddenly.
Manipur still unstable
The advisory also specifically mentions the state of Manipur, which is under curfew and restrictions following the communal violence that broke out in 2023. Noting that further violent clashes occurred between May and July 2025, the FCDO has issued a clear advisory to British citizens to “avoid non-essential travel”.
Insurance and travel rules
The British Government has also clarified that if a traveler travels against the advice of the FCDO, his or her travel insurance may be cancelled. Since the Wagah-Attari border is also currently closed, it has been advised to avoid traveling through that route.
Special instructions for women and LGBTQ+ passengers
FCDO has published separate guidelines for women travellers, LGBTQ+ travelers and solo travellers. Keeping in mind the social and cultural differences in India, they have been advised to be prepared regarding local conditions, transportation, police assistance and proper insurance.
Updates and emergency notifications
The British Government has urged travelers to monitor FCDO email alerts and “Travel Aware” social media accounts (X, Facebook, Instagram) for timely information. They have also been advised to follow the instructions of local authorities in case of any emergency and keep a close eye on the local media. The British Government ultimately stated that “No journey is completely safe. Therefore, travelers should make appropriate insurance and preparations depending on their destination.” Due to this advisory many British citizens planning to visit India for tourism or business have temporarily postponed their plans.
