News India Live, Digital Desk: Giving a new blow to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday won an important seat in the Standing Committee and strengthened its hold on the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). A day before this, he captured the posts of president and vice -president in all ward committees.
BJP councilor Satya Sharma defeated AAP’s Hema Vohra by a decisive margin of 35 votes. Out of 227 councilors, Sharma got 130 votes, while Vohra got 95 votes, while two votes were declared illegal. This latest victory further strengthens the BJP’s position before the high-day voting to be held on June 12, when 12 members nominated by the Chairman and Vice President of the Standing Committee as well as the regional committees of MCD will be selected.
The current political structure in the 238 -member MCD includes 117 councilors of BJP, 97 AAP, 16 of Indraprastha Vikas Party (IVP) and 8 of Congress. The Congress decided to stay away from Tuesday’s voting, while the BJP, AAP and IVP councilors cast their votes.
Although the informal BJP-IVP alliance was jointly expected to get 133 votes, Sharma got three votes less than this number, possibly two AAP councilors are absent and possible cross-voting. Despite the slight shortage, the BJP candidate’s victory never doubted.
Satya Sharma: At the forefront of the post of president?
The MCD’s Standing Committee plays an important role in the decision -making process of the municipal body, which oversees major financial and policy decisions. It consists of 18 members, out of which six are selected directly from the House and 12 are selected from regional committees. Satya Sharma is now considered to be at the forefront of the post of president, although the final result will be decided in the next week’s voting.
With the result of Tuesday, the Standing Committee currently has 11 members of the BJP and 7 members of AAP, giving the BJP an edge before the decisive elections on June 12.
