Many people often complain of bad taste or bitterness in the mouth after waking up in the morning. Most people consider it a normal thing and forget it after brushing. But if this is happening to you continuously, then be careful. According to doctors, bad taste in the mouth in the morning can be a major indication of some disease developing inside the body or stomach upset. To understand in detail how serious this problem is and what are the reasons behind it, we have had a special conversation with health experts.
Stomach acid and gastroesophageal reflux are the biggest reasons
Dr. Santram Verma, senior physician working in the district hospital of Ghaziabad, said that the main and common reason for bitter mouth in the morning can be gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) i.e. acid reflux.
According to the doctor, when we eat food at night, natural acid is produced in the stomach to digest it. Many times, when we eat very heavy or spicy food at night, or sleep immediately after eating, this acid comes up through the food pipe to the throat and mouth. For this reason, when you wake up in the morning, you feel a strange bitterness or sourness in the mouth.
Is this an alarm of liver failure?
Pointing out another very important thing, Dr. Santram Verma said that continuous bitterness in the mouth can also be a sign of liver disease. Liver is an important organ of our body, whose job is to remove toxins (dirt) from the body.
When the liver stops working smoothly or there is any weakness in it, toxic substances start accumulating in the body. This has a direct effect on our taste buds and spoils the taste of mouth. Dr. Verma advises that if this problem persists, then one should contact the doctor without any delay and get a Liver Function Test (LFT) done.
Poor oral hygiene: bacteria hidden in teeth and gums
Apart from stomach and liver, the third major cause of bitterness in mouth is related to your oral health. Doctors say that people who do not brush their teeth before sleeping at night or do not clean their tongue regularly, harmful bacteria start growing rapidly in their mouth. These bacteria accumulate in the corners of the teeth and gums. Due to these bacteria, not only does the mouth taste bitter and astringent in the morning, but the problem of strong bad breath also arises. If it is ignored for a long time, the risk of gum infection increases.
How to avoid this problem? Doctor’s important tips
If you want to get rid of this problem forever, then Dr. Santram Verma has given some very easy and effective solutions, which are important to include in your daily routine:
-
Eat lightly before sleeping: Leave the habit of eating late at night and always eat light and easily digestible food. Keep a gap of at least 2 hours between sleeping and eating.
-
Oral care is important: Brush twice a day (after waking up in the morning and before sleeping at night). Along with brushing, never forget to clean the tongue with a tongue cleaner.
-
Permanent treatment of acidity: If you are suffering from gas or acidity for a long time, instead of relying on home remedies, consult a specialist doctor and take appropriate medicine.
-
Lifestyle Improvement: Improve your diet. Avoid consuming excessive oily, junk food and caffeine (tea-coffee) and drink adequate amount of water throughout the day.
