Tragic accident: This case is almost 15 years old, when a student of BIT Mesra died untimely death while on the campus of the institute or during related activities.
Allegation of negligence of the institute: The family alleged that the student died due to the negligence of the institute management and lack of safety standards. The family had approached the lower courts and then the High Court for compensation.
From High Court to Supreme Court: Earlier, the High Court had also given its verdict in favor of the student, which was challenged by BIT Mesra in the Supreme Court. The institute argued that they were not directly responsible for this incident.

Responsibility of the Institute: Rejecting the institute’s arguments, the Supreme Court said that when a student takes admission in an institute, his safety and welfare is the responsibility of the management.
Compensation amount: The court ordered that the institute pay ₹20 lakh to the victim’s family. This amount has been decided as compensation for the loss of future of the student and the mental trauma caused to the family.
Payment including interest: The court has also clarified that if there is a delay in payment, the institute will also have to pay the prescribed interest on this amount.
