To deal with this problem and to help consumers identify genuine gold, the ‘Bureau of Indian Standards’ (BIS) of the Government of India has come up with a special mobile application – BIS Care AppThis app will help you to check the purity of gold jewelery in a few minutes and find out whether it is real or fake.

What is BIS Care App and how does it help?

BIS Care App is an app launched by the Bureau of Indian Standards, whose main objective is to provide customers with accurate information about the identity and purity of hallmarked gold. In India, the purity of gold and silver is certified by BIS Hallmark. Through this app you can verify that hallmark.

Easy way to check purity of gold (from BIS Care App):

1. Download BIS Care App: First of all, go to your smartphone’s Play Store (Android) or App Store (iOS) and search by writing ‘BIS Care’. Once you find the app, download and install it.
2. Register: After opening the app, you will have to register by filling some basic information like your mobile number, email ID and name. An OTP will come which will complete your registration.
3. Go to the ‘Verify HUID’ section: You will see many options on the home screen of the app. There will be a section called ‘Verify HUID’ (Hallmark Unique Identification), on which you have to click.
4. Enter HUID number: Now you have to enter the HUID number printed on your gold jewellery. HUID is a 6 digit alpha-numeric (combination of letters and numbers) code, which is printed on every hallmarked jewellery. This is a unique identifier on the jewellery.
5. Get Details: As soon as you enter the HUID number and ‘Search’, the app will show you all the information related to the jewellery. This will include the purity of the jewelery (in carats), information about the jewelery maker (registered jeweller’s name and license number), details of the testing center and other relevant information.
6. Investigate and Report:
   • If the information you see (like karat purity) matches the hallmark on the jewellery, it means the gold is genuine and pure.
   • If the information given on the app does not match the hallmark on the jewelery or the details of your purchase, it could be a sign of fraud. You can complain directly to BIS through the ‘Complaint’ section in the app itself.
